šŸ“„Ā  Collected Community-Level Data

Through cross-sectional surveys & field visits, our PhD and MSc students were able to collect valuable farmer-reported data on:

  • Crop types and diversity
  • Farmer prioritised traits
  • Cropping systems
  • Climate-related challenges and adaptive practices

From the collected data, students are working on reports and publications, which shall be shared with the district

Preliminary Findings

  • Cropping and crop rotation are the most common systems practiced by farmers.
  • Beans & bananas are the most cultivated crops in the district.
  • Beans are more cultivated during the short season of February to May (first season), and these are mainly rotated with maize in the long season of August to January (second season).
  • Economic incentives drive farmers’ crop variety choices at the expense of climate resilience
  • Underutilised varieties were found to be more nutritionally rich than popular varieties
