Throughout an intensive one-month training program in Belgium with Ghent University, Mr. Lasto Mubiru and Mr. Owen Muhangi embarked on a transformative journey into the world of IT infrastructure and system administration, blending theory with immersive hands-on experience. This training exposed me to cutting-edge technologies and best practices that are shaping modern IT environments. Each week unveils new dimensions of system management, network security, and data integrity—crucial pillars of any resilient digital ecosystem.
Mastering the Command Line: Linux Administration
The journey began with the fundamentals of Linux system administration. Through a series of practical sessions, I strengthened my skills in navigating the command line, managing users and permissions, handling file systems, and performing basic troubleshooting. These foundational skills laid the groundwork for all other system-level operations.
KoboToolbox Migration and Management
There was migration and management of KoboToolbox for data collection systems, and local instances were set up to back up data, deploy updates, and troubleshoot common issues. This experience was crucial in understanding how field data collection tools can be securely managed and sustained at an institutional level.
Securing Research Data with REDCap
REDCap administration was another eye-opening area where the user role configurations, project setup, server maintenance, and data security protocols were. Valuable resources, such as the REDCap Community, are critical for collaborative problem solving and system optimization.
Best Practices for Data Centers
Exposure to data center best practices was a highlight of the program. Exploring critical components such as physical security, disaster recovery, environmental controls, cooling, and equipment management can help visualize the level of care required to ensure system reliability and continuous uptime.
Znuny’s IT Support Management
Our evaluation of the Znuny ticketing system taught me how to effectively manage technical support workflows. From installation and configuration to daily operations and customization, this tool demonstrated how structured support systems can improve efficiency and response time.
Designing Resilient Networks
In a collaborative session, member institutions presented and critiqued their network diagrams. Through open discussion, we collectively refined our network designs, shared challenges, and emphasized the importance of comprehensive documentation for continuity and accountability.
Learning from the Experts: FreeIPA in Focus
A unique part of the training was the collaborative session between Mbarara University of Science and Technology and the team from Ghent University. We explored the architecture and benefits of FreeIPA for identity and authentication management. This discussion deepened our understanding of scalable user management and how to align it with our institutional needs.
A Visit to OPNsense: Where Innovation Meets Cybersecurity
One of the highlights of this journey was a field visit to the OPNsense firewall manufacturing facility in the Netherlands. Witnessing the production, testing, and deployment of high-performance firewall systems gave us a front-row seat to global advancements in cybersecurity. We engaged directly with developers and engineers, gaining insights into real-world security challenges and innovative solutions.
