🚀 From Knowledge to Power: Adolescents in Bundibugyo Thrive at the Crossroads of Health and Entrepreneurship
What happens when health education meets economic empowerment? In Bundibugyo District, the answer is simple: transformation.
Over the past months, Project 4Â has walked a deeply impactful journey with adolescents, empowering them with critical knowledge on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Topics like family planning, menstrual hygiene, and gender-based violence (GBV) were no longer taboo; they had become talking points, confidence builders, and life-savers. This knowledge laid the foundation for healthier futures but the question remained:

What next?
That’s where Project Five stepped in with a bold idea: “Let’s merge skilling with mindset change.”
đź’ˇ The 5-Day Bootcamp: Where Health and Entrepreneurship Converged
On Monday, July 21st, 2025, a new chapter began. A 5-day Bootcamp was launched in Bundibugyo a collaboration between Sub project 4 & 5 that aimed not only to inform but to equip. The goal was to empower adolescents with entrepreneurial skills, a business mindset, and the resilience to build a better life.
Dr. Baisaba James flags off the training
The bootcamp was officially flagged off by Dr. James Baisaba, Superintendent of Bundibugyo General Hospital, who commended the effort led by Dr. Ngonzi Joseph and the MUST team for bringing this transformative initiative to the community.
Business Basics & Relationship Real Talk
The bootcamp kicked off with an interactive introduction to entrepreneurship, from identifying real-world problems to turning them into sustainable income-generating ventures. But it didn’t stop there.
Adolescents dived deep into discussions on healthy relationships, understanding GBV, and breaking myths around menstruation. For many, it was the first time they felt heard, seen, and capable of shaping their own futures.
Then came the showstopper…
💵 The “50K Challenge” – Learning by Doing
Teams plan for the 50k challenge
Each team received UGX 50,000 with a challenge: ideate, source, market, and sell a product—all within 5 hours. The twist? Keep proper financial records, track expenses, and make a profit—just like in real life. Thanks to Dr. Manasseh’s hands-on training in basic financial literacy, the participants were ready.
Here’s how they fared:
🔹 One Love Team – Sold fresh vegetables and earned UGX 20,000 profit
🔹 Brain Power – Made and sold chapati, earning UGX 25,000 profit
🔹 Brave Heads – Ventured into watermelon sales, earning UGX 25,000 profit
🔹 One Blood Group – Sold eggs, making UGX 10,000 profit
🔹 The Brains – Focused on tomatoes, earning UGX 15,000 profit

Businge, a participant shares the challenges and lessons learnt from the 50k challenge
But the true victory wasn’t in the money it was in the confidence, teamwork, communication, and customer care skills they gained. The realization that UGX 50,000 could spark real business success within hours was nothing short of mind-blowing.
🌱 Planting Seeds for a Healthier, Wealthier Generation
This bootcamp wasn’t just about business. It was about belief. The belief that young people, when equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, can protect their health, accumulate wealth, and change the course of their lives.
And the journey does not stop here.
As one adolescent stated, “I had no idea I could run a business. I now do. And I want to accomplish more.”
Bundibugyo, this is only the beginning. đź’Ş
The bootcamp transitioned into practical skilling sessions. The adolescent participants paths based on their interests, including
- Baking
- Soap Making
- Crafts and Design
These are not just skills; they are lifelines, tools of empowerment that will allow these young people to start their own businesses, earn income, and build dignified, independent lives.
From health to livelihoods, from knowledge to practical action, this synergy was proof that when we invest in young people, we shape a better tomorrow.
Subprojects 4 and 5, the transformative skilling synergy bootcamp, were nothing short of jaw-dropping, but a powerful display of potential, passion, and purpose.
With the three hands-on skilling areas: Bakery, Soap Making, and Crafts participants were encouraged to choose what truly resonated with their hearts. Our goal was simple: to help these adolescents find a sustainable livelihood that they could carry forward beyond the training.
And what a day it was! Witnessing their enthusiasm as they dove into their chosen skills was all the evidence we needed that these young minds were exactly where they belonged.

🥖 Bakery Brilliance: Taste of Passion
Led by an inspiring chef-Mr. Robert, the bakery group quickly got into action- flour, passion, and purpose flying everywhere! With recipes shared and guidance provided, the eager boys and girls whipped up their first product: chapatti – Uganda’s all-time favorite snack.
Every bite of their work left people longing for more. And when they moved on to half cakes, the room filled with the aroma of success, it was like tasting heaven. Even more heartwarming was seeing them take ownership: pricing their goods, tracking sales, and practicing real entrepreneurial skills. Their startup spirit was alive and thriving.
🧼 Soap Stars in the Making

The soap-making team was equally impressive. Gerald, their dynamic trainer, patiently walked them through the science and process of both liquid and bar soap production. From understanding the chemistry, identifying common errors, to mixing vibrant colors and fragrances, it was an exciting, hands-on learning journey.
By the end of the day, their liquid soap was market-ready, beautifully branded and packed. Today, they wrap up with their bar soap production. Their confidence? Soaring. Their soap? Irresistible.

🧺 Crafting Dreams into Reality
In the crafts section, Sarafin worked magic with the weaving team. Patiently guiding and correcting, he helped these young learners create their first hand-woven shopping bags. The joy of making something beautiful with their own hands was written all over their faces.
These eco-friendly, durable, and attractive shopping bags are not just products they are marketable solutions. Each piece was a symbol of resilience, creativity, and opportunity.

💡 A Transformative Experience
This skilling bootcamp has been a groundbreaking experience for the community the very first of its kind and its impact is already evident. We’ve witnessed a powerful shift: adolescents who once lacked confidence are now stepping forward as motivated, skilled, and visionary young entrepreneurs. Their growth has been nothing short of inspiring.
As Project 4 and Project 5 prepare follow-up activities to support these budding ventures, we are thrilled to continue walking alongside them, nurturing ideas, refining business models, and fueling sustainable growth.

What made this initiative even more significant was its direct contribution to global development goals. The training strongly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By equipping adolescents with practical, in-demand skills in areas like bakery, soap making, and crafts, the bootcamp advances SDG 4.4, which seeks to increase the number of youth with technical and vocational skills for employment and entrepreneurship. It also actively supports SDG 8 by creating pathways to decent work and economic resilience among vulnerable youth.
Our deepest gratitude goes to Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Flemish funders for their unwavering support through the UCoBS Project. Your investment is not just creating skills it is shaping futures, restoring hope, and contributing to a more inclusive and economically empowered Uganda.
