MUST IUC – UCoBS Masters’ Scholar Celebrating a Master’s Degree in Biology

On 28 October 2025, Bukenya Hakim celebrated a major academic milestone as he graduated with a Master of Science in Biology (Natural Resources Ecology, Management, and Conservation) from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

As a master’s scholar under the MUST IUC–UCoBS Sub-Project 2, “Climate Change Adaptation for Food Production,” Hakim conducted research titled Climate Variability’s Influence on Crop Diversity and Farmer-Prioritized Traits in Southwestern Uganda. His study addressed critical questions surrounding climate resilience, food security, and the future of underutilized traditional crop varieties in a rapidly changing environment.

This achievement reflects not only Hakim’s persistence, discipline, and dedication but also the collective support of those who enabled him to excel. He expresses profound gratitude to the MUST IUC–UCoBS project for funding and enabling his academic journey. He especially appreciates the Sub-Project 2 Team, headed by Prof. Matthieu Kervyn and Prof. Grace Kagoro, for the trust and the opportunity to offer him a scholarship. He also acknowledges the Project Support Unit, whose efficiency ensured that requisitions for field activities were processed and paid on time.

Hakim further extends sincere appreciation to his supervisors, Prof. Grace Kagoro, Dr. Justine Nakintu, and Ms. Dina Nabasumba, for their exceptional mentorship, intellectual guidance, and continuous encouragement. He also thanks his classmates, with whom he shared the challenges and triumphs of the master’s journey.

A special acknowledgement goes to the citizen scientists who supported data collection and provided additional insights whenever called upon. Their practical knowledge, responsiveness, and commitment were key to the success of his study.

Hakim’s family has been his foundation and motivation. His mother, Tumushabe Mary; his fiancée, Orphrah Nasasira; and their daughter, Shanelle Shivan Tryphin, offered unwavering love, patience, and encouragement throughout the demanding years of study. He also appreciates the support of his guardian, Staff Sergeant Katuranzye Eric John, who has been a consistent source of strength and guidance.

Today, Hakim’s journey continues as he pursues his PhD at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences, within the Department of Biology, thanks to a Universitas Scholarship.  His doctoral research examines the drivers, impacts, and management of woody encroachment in savanna ecosystems under changing climatic conditions, with broad implications for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem functioning, and sustainable landscape management.

As he progresses into this next chapter, Bukenya Hakim remains committed to advancing knowledge and contributing meaningfully to climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable ecological systems in Uganda and beyond.
