πŸ“Œ Research Progress Update! Dr. Brenda Ainomugisha

Dr. Brenda Ainomugisha, a P4 PhD Scholar, continues to make strong progress on her study at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) assessing how point-of-care contraceptive provision influences postpartum uptake among women delivering by cesarean section.

Study Objectives:

  1. To explore barriers and facilitators to point-of-care contraceptive provision on immediate postpartum uptake.
  2. To describe postpartum contraceptive uptake among women up to one year after point-of-care provision.

Study Site: Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH)

Activities Undertaken:

  • Research Assistant Training: Conducted a training session for two research assistants on qualitative interviewing techniques, informed consent processes, and data confidentiality.
  • Participant Recruitment: Recruited eligible postpartum women who delivered by cesarean section and received point-of-care contraceptive counseling, using purposive sampling.
  • Data Collection: Conducted in-depth interviews with participants during their hospital stay and scheduled follow-up visits. All interviews were audio-recorded with participant consent.

Data Management: Safely stored audio recordings and developed verbatim English transcripts. Regular reviews ensured accuracy and completeness.

Supervision and Quality Control: Held daily review meetings with research assistants to monitor progress, discuss challenges, and maintain interview quality.

Challenges Encountered:

  • Difficulty in scheduling follow-up interviews due to participant availability and communication issues.
  • Some participants were hesitant to discuss sensitive contraceptive experiences immediately after delivery.

Next Steps:

  • Complete transcription of remaining interviews.
  • Begin qualitative coding and thematic analysis.
  • Continue follow-up interviews where applicable and prepare for internal reporting.
