Empowering the Batwa Community Through Cultural Costumes and Instruments

The MUST IUC–UCoBS Programme, through Subproject 1 led by Dr. Medard Twinamatsiko, is giving back to the Batwa communities in the southern sector of Bwindi by strengthening their cultural identity and enhancing opportunities in community-based tourism.

For many years, Batwa cultural performances have played a key role in sharing the community’s rich heritage with visitors. However, a lack of professional costumes and instruments often limited the quality, visibility, and economic benefit of these performances.

To address this gap, the project has invested in high-quality cultural costumes, branded attire, and traditional instruments to empower Batwa guides and performers.

Reviving Cultural Identity Through Costumes

The initiative provides leather costumes for Batwa tourist guides, Kitenge outfits for cultural dancers, Branded T-shirts and hats and 50 pairs of shoes to ensure comfort and uniformity

These costumes not only elevate the professionalism of performances but also strengthen the community’s cultural pride.

Celebrating Tradition Through Music

To enrich cultural demonstrations, the project supplied traditional Batwa instruments, including drums, thumb pianos, horn trumpets, and leg shakers.

These tools enable performers to share authentic Batwa rhythms and stories, making every cultural encounter memorable for visitors.

Impact on Tourism and Livelihoods

With enhanced attire and instruments, Batwa performers now present a cohesive, vibrant, and culturally grounded experience. This has:

  • Boosted visitor engagement
  • Created new income opportunities

  • Improved the visibility of Batwa culture in the tourism landscape

  • Strengthened community cohesion and confidence
